However, their partnership faces three major obstacles that could significantly impede progress.
The Global Rare Earth Landscape
Rare earth elements have become synonymous with technological sovereignty and economic security. China currently dominates global rare earth production and processing, controlling approximately 60-70 percent of mining and nearly 90 percent of refining capacity. This concentration has prompted countries like India and Japan to seek alternative supply chains and develop domestic capabilities.
Japan, despite having minimal rare earth deposits, possesses advanced processing technology and substantial industrial demand. India, meanwhile, holds the world's fifth-largest rare earth reserves but lacks sophisticated extraction and refining infrastructure. On paper, this creates a perfect complementary relationship.
